9th SMA African Festival

The SMA African Art Museum will be an exciting place on Festival Day. There will be a sneak preview of two brand-new exhibitions. Bob Koenig will be on hand to tell visitors about them. Pax Rwanda: Embroideries by the Women of Savane Rutongo is comprised of twenty exquisite embroideries by a cooperative of Hutu and Tutsi women who work together to survive in the aftermath of the horrific genocide of 1994. A seminar on contemporary life in Rwanda will be presented in the African Art Museum from 3:30 to 4:30pm on Sunday, October 9th. Admission to the seminar is free but seating is limited. Please call Mr. Koenig at (201) 894-8611 to make a reservation. The other exhibition, Liberia: A Land Old and New, celebrates a hundred years of the Catholic Church in Liberia with masks, figure sculptures, textiles and costumes from the land founded by freed American slaves in 1847. Magbana, a well-known and very popular trio of drummers and a dancer will perform in the museum space from 1 to 1:30pm and from 1:45 to 2:15pm.

The Rwandan embroideries will be on sale in the museum. All proceeds go to Savane Rutongo.
